Orienteering Merit Badge Class at Spring-O
Merit Badge registration at Spring-O is limited to 60 scouts, then waitlist.
We have done a lot of work to make it possible to complete the Orienteering Merit Badge at the event. It is a long day and requires some ambition. Scouts must participate in both the AM and PM sessions and there is still some work they need to do on their own during free time at the event.
- AM Session, 3 rotations, 30 min each (Req 1,2,3,4):
- Orienteering Basics, The Compass, The Map
- PM Session, 3 rotations, 30 min each (Req 6,8,9):
- Strategies and Symbols, Designing a Course, Officiating a Course
- On your own:
- Run 3 orienteering courses and report on them
- Point-to-Point, Maze-O, Night-O (Req 7)
- 100m Pace Count, walk and jog (Req 5)
- Teach Orienteering Techniques (Req 10)
- Run 3 orienteering courses and report on them

- Scout Rank Advancement
- There is not an organized program for rank advancement, however you can make progress while you’re here
- Scout Rank 3a. Demonstrate how a compass works and how to orient a map. Use a map to point out and tell the meaning of five map symbols.
- First Class Rank 4a. Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least one mile and requires measuring the height and/or width of designated items (tree, tower, canyon, ditch, etc.)
- Webelos Walkabout
- There is not an organized program for Webelos Walkabout, however, you will see you could do quite a bit while you are here.
